daughter.
sister.
American.
student.
girlfriend.
hiker.
dancer.
The above words are how I define myself.
I identify most with dancer.
this is my picture, I took it, so you can't steal it.
The words in which we choose to define ourselves are very indicative of the type of person we are. Ask anyone that you are meeting how they would define themselves, take that word and remember it, get to know them, and then relate the word to the type of person they are. For instance, you ask this of someone and they say, "Runner", you get to know them and you find out that most runners are persistent hard workers who do not take the easy way out.
A word is just a word until it is meaning and definition to it. How would you describe yourself and what does it say about who you are?
I consider myself a dancer. Dance is my refuge. No matter how long I go without it, the second I come back to it, I fall in love all over again. Having danced for a majority of my life, 15 years out of 22, I have become a product of dance. Dance has defined me. That is sort of hypocritical to what I was saying earlier, but don't you think that is has to start somewhere. We don't wake up one morning and say, "I think I will call myself a singer." No. Most times it is the thing that we fall in love with, the thing we are good at, the one thing that we feel safe doing, that defines us. I attribute the person I am today, to dance. I believe in my deepest heart that without it I would not be where I am today. I would not have the discipline or the passion. Having that creative outlet, the place to let everything go, it something that I hope everyone can find. I have posted this quote before, but I am going to put it on here again, because to me this is the true meaning of a dancer.
"The Dancer believes that his art has something to say which
cannot be expressed in words or in any other way than by dancing...
there are times when the simple dignity of movement can fulfill the function
of a volume of words. There are movements which impinge upon the
nerves with a strength that is incomparable, for movement has
power to stir the senses and emotions, unique in itself. This is
the dancer's justification for being, and his reason for searching further
for deeper aspects of his art."
- Doris Humphrey
Some may consider using this one word to describe yourself, a stereotype, but to me it is not. I simply use these words to thicken MY story. Everyone has a story and no one should judge that person's story based on one word. That is unfair.
It was a discussion about stereotypes, in a class the other day, that brought on this thought. It appears to be human nature for someone to defend themselves physically. But what is often less noticed is when people defend themselves on an emotional level. When someone calls me something I am not, I immediately stand up for myself. Do you? You Should. What you are is important, and the people around you should respect that.
Stand up for your own definition.
Concentrate on your dreams
because everything else is just
background noise.
