Is it fate or something more?

Fate: The development of events beyond a person's control, regarded as determined by a supernatural power.

This is a heavy word. A word that is hard to invest in. A word that can make you question everything around you. A word that has the power to destroy. This word hangs on the tongues of many and often ends up making each of us wonder if what we are doing is our fate....

Synonyms for fate include:

Chance: The possibility of something happening.

Destiny: The events that will necessarily happen to a particular person of thing in the future.

Kismet: Destiny, Fate

Serendipity: The occurrence and development of events by chance in a happy or beneficial way.

I could go on and on....but I think you get the picture. These are unseen words. They are words that we as humans cannot make happen. This is probably one of the hardest things to accept. The fact that we cannot alter or change or influence our future is something hard to understand.

You are probably beginning to wonder why on Earth I have chosen to talk about this today, but things are happening in my life that I have no control over, which made me think....Fate? Destiny? What is this?

The Eastern cultures have a belief that men and women are born with red string attached to the ankle of themselves and the one they are meant to be with. This is known as Red Sting of Fate. It is said that the two individuals attached to the same string are meant to be together, are soul mates, and are destined lovers regardless of time, place or circumstances. "This magical cord may stretch or tangle, but never break."

This belief is mirrored in the Western cultures with the thought of a Soulmate.....However through my research I found the back story to Soulmate, possibly you didn't know about it either. The story comes from Plato's Symposium. The belief is that humans originally consisted of four arms, four legs and a single head made of two faces. Zeus feared their power and split them in half, condemning them to spend the rest of their lives searching for the other half to complete them.

So where do we go from here if it seems that everything is already laid out for us.....do we live the life of Fatalism and just accept that all events are predetermined and therefore inevitable? Or do we accept the possibility that maybe there is more than one Soulmate?

Of course there are many outlooks on the ideas of each individual's future. Of course I have no right to determine what should be believed....so I guess we just keep living. We continue to wake up each morning with a smile and a good thought. I suppose that in the end, when it is all over, that we each will look back and relive our lives and we will have to decide whether it was fate, hard work or something greater. (Or maybe it all goes back to the Law of Attraction....)

“A guy and a girl can be just friends, but at one point or another, they will

fall for each other...Maybe temporarily, maybe at the wrong

time, maybe too late, or maybe forever”

- Dave Matthews Band
