"Friends, Lovers or Nothing"

I have several favorite quotes. For some reason I always seem to turn to quotes in times of misunderstanding and unknown. I find some comfort in the words of wise men and women who have ventured before me. I find relief that there is someone out there who has felt the way I do about a certain idea but they had the courage to put it into a great symphony of words. If you have read my blog before then you have noticed that I almost always attach a quote to the end of each post. These are quotes I find relevant to what I have just discussed, but never before have I made the quote a center of my post, so here it goes.

"A guy and a girl can be just friends, but
at one point or another, they will fall for
each other...Maybe temporarily, maybe at
the wrong time, maybe too late, or maybe forever."
- Dave Matthews

I have never quite figured out why it is that I love this quotes so much, but I was recently talking with a friend about love and relationships. She stated to me, "I don't know anyone can really ever love more than one person?" My response, "Well I don't know."

I guess maybe what I should have thought of is the idea of a soulmate or something. Instead I found myself thinking of all the people I love in my life. I love my parents, my family, my friends and my pets. So in theory, yes, I do love more than one person but so does everyone else. Then I took a step back and thought, of course the love she was talking about and that this quote talks about is not a familiar love but rather a deep and everlasting love. Once I pondered a little more about this type of love I rounded back to the idea of a soulmate and as much as I debate with myself about their existence, I found comfort.

The conclusion I have come to about her theory is that we do love only one person, it is just that we don't know we don't love everyone else in between until we have met them. We may think we love someone, a high school crush or a college boyfriend, but in reality we may not have actually loved them with our whole heart. We can't be one hundred percent sure until we just have that "feeling" and just "know." Of course this is all under the notion that you just know when you are with that one person you are meant to love. I guess our heart just knows, "this is the only person you will ever truly love."

So back to my quote and why it is one of my favorites. This quote, in my opinion, expresses that funny feeling in your stomach you get whenever you meet someone new and you both just clique. It is that new "flirty" relationship. The banter back and forth, the whitty commentary and the potential for something else. This quotes puts into excellent words that this can happen with anyone, this simple love is attainable with just about everyone you meet, except it doesn't always work out. This quote reaffirms a belief I have that all great relationships start with a friendship and then one or both falls for the other.

I am not suggesting this be the way that everyone thinks about love, it is just my 22 year old theories from a girl who is in love and has connected with this quote. I just want to also state that I believe every situation is different and we should never and can never judge someone else's feelings because we are not the one feeling them.

The pictures are not mine and the title of the post is from the title of a John Mayer song.
